I Set Up For Art Lesson 8
Like This:
What we used or had available:
Sketching pencils, art paper, constuction paper (optional),
9 square grid, scissors, paintbrushes, glue, watercolor paint,
oil pastels, crayola crayons and Come Look With Me-Artists At Work.
I went over our Concept:
First Off Shapes and Patterns
Early Americans that traveled West made quilt blocks to keep their family's warm.
So our part. one was on shapes (triangles and squares) and pattern.
I allowed the children to either use construction paper and or draw
write on their 9 square grid.
They all chose to draw on their grids.
Before I allowed them to go into the lesson~
We discussed:
Different kinds of Art review (names of different art styles example: Landscape)
We also talked about Pattern, Piecing, Quilt, and Quilt Block.
**************
We also reviewed, learned and looked at
some great artist work:
The Artist in his Museum-Charles Willson Peale
The Oregon Trail-Albert Bierstadt
and Victory Quilt-Dorinda Moody Slade
When early americans created the quilts they usually told
a story (the quilt) of their trip.

Some of our Keywords and Review Words For Part One:
- Architect
- Cupola
- frieze
- inspiration
- landscape
- pediment
- realistic
- pattern
- quilt
- pediment
Then I allowed them to go to work
making their quilt block design.
Once they all got a grip on what pattern
they wish to create they took off.
Working on the 9 square grid.
The 9 square results:
Steven upper top left, Bottom left Jeremiah's,
Upper right Benjamin's and Bottom right Phoebe's.
Part Two:
Concept: We moved onto Space (illusion of space) and
Overlapping.
*************
We learned about:
Giotto's Paintings-He was able to represent a sense of space.
Donatello's (during the renaissance the concept of humanism)
Fra Angelico-He showed the illusion of space in his paintings by
making objects in the background smaller and higher.
Sandro Botticelli-Also created the illusion of space
Compare and Contrast each artists ways of
representing the illusion of space.
*****************************************
Keywords or Review Words For Part Two:
- Apprentice
- background
- foreground
- fresco
- overlapping
- humanism
- symbol
- representational
Definition of Space and Overlapping:
Space: The creation of a visual perspective, which gives the illusion of depth is another Element of Art called Space. Form to be seen clearly, need space around them to create sense of edge that defines their shape--Positive Space and Negative Space.
Overlapping: Being in front of and partly covering something else.
**********************
Then I walked the children through the lesson by telling them from
k12 art lesson what to draw (a guide)
- Draw 2 foreground houses one on the left one on the right.
- Draw background house
- Draw the ground (be sure to make children aware of the horizon line)
- Add outdoor details
- Add indoor details (optional)
Then we added color to the landscape.
Using Oil Pastels.
Darker colors more for background lighter for foreground.
Top left Mom's preschool looking landscape,
Top right next to mine Hubby's,
Below mine on the left is Steven's he did
not wish to add color, to the right of Steven's
Jeremiah's, below Steven's Benjamin's
and below Jeremiah's bottom right
is Phoebe's.
To Finish up the lesson we concluded
with another overlapping landscape.
We took our lesson from K12
and wrapped it in...
Create a city with hanging flags.
We drew a street with buildings;
Then add in the flags making
sure you use Overlapping
for the buildings and the flags.
We chose to watercolor these particular
scenes although not our favorite medium to work with.
Steven loves to draw or sketch.
Jeremiah loves tempura paint
Benjamin loves oil pastels.
Phoebe and I would be happy with anything other than watercolor.
Hubby worked with Phoebe creating overlapping
buildings and flags we used his drawing
as a demostration so we could all learn.
We all paid close attention to the dad.
Jeremiah painting his picture.
Our overlapping landscapes.
Top left corner Mom's, Top Right Corner Steven's-he wasn't happy with
the way his turned out doesn't like watercolors either, Bottom Left corner
Jeremiah's I thought he did really well; Bottom Right Corner Daddy's and Phoebe's
she painted most of it and I thought she did pretty good with the watercolors,
and the bottom center Benjamin's he gave up didn't like it at all.
Overall the kids learned alot, overlapping isn't
a easy concept tricky to the eyes but,
it was a good lesson and all the art turned out well.
